Result of Measurement

The picture shows a C60 steel. The white areas are ferritic grains, the striped areas are perlite.

Checklist The steps

1. Embedding the sample

Work exclusively under the extractor hood

2. Grinding the sample

Start with the coarse grit:

a) Grind the edges

b) Grind the surface

3. Cleaning of the sample with ultrasonic sound and alcohol

Use the ultrasonic bath

a) After that rinse the sample with alcohol

b) Dry the sample with hot air

4. Polishing the sample with 6 micron polishing paste

Remove the Beilby-layer

The thickness of the Beilby-layer is approx. 50 µm

5. Cleaning of the sample with ultrasonic sound and alcohol

Use the ultrasonic bath

a) After that rinse the sample with alcohol

b) Dry the sample with hot air

6. Polishing of the probe with 1 micron polishing paste

Fine polishing

7. Cleaning of the sample with ultrasonic sound and alcohol

Use the ultrasonic bath

a) After that rinse the sample with alcohol

b) Dry the sample with hot air

8. Etching the sample with HNO3

Use protective clothing

a) Gown

b) Safety glasses

c) Gloves

9. Light microscopic investigation

Investigate and interpret

a) Fix the sample onto the specimen holder with modeling clay (use protective paper)

b) Observe sample with 50x enlargement

b) Observe sample with 500x enlargement and measure and interpret relevant areas
